Copying DVDs With Ease
Kevin Rose of The Screen Savers is still going strong with the money saving tips. Last night he gave us serveral free software downloads that can make copying DVDs a breeze. No matter which platform you are running, Windows or Mac OS X, he has the software for you.
PC:
Download and install DVD Shrink
Download and install NeroRun DVD Shrink and choose “Backup!” - DVD Shrink is a great all-in-one solution.
MAC:
Download and install DVDBackup
Download and install DVD2oneDownload and install Toast
I can vouch for DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter (which is not in his list above) for I use them fairly regular. They are easy to use and if you do happen to need some assistance, there are online tutorials to help you get your task done. Kevin concentrated mainly on the Mac software on The Screen Savers, and by the looks of he demonstration, the software is just as easy to use as the pieces I use. So definitely check them out, THEY’RE FREE! (I stand corrected. You can try them for free, Toast and DVD2one are not free. - Thanks OZ)

Not quite so easy
Toast and DVD2One are both unfree software. That said, you can get away with just buying DVD2one and then using the tools Apple provides (i.e. don’t bother buying Toast) as longs as you only want to burn DVDs. For VCDs I think Toast is the only option.
Also not that ‘Mac the Ripper’ is a pretty effective extractor as well.

Ozguring,
Could you give us a step-by-step on how to rip & burn a copy of a DVD movie using DVD2One and the tools in Apple OSX?
Also, is Mac the Ripper a good substitute for DVD2One? MTR is free, but DVD2One is not.
Thanks.

Jerry, I will try and put something together but here is a brief summary. MTR is a substitute for DVDBackup. You use either to get the DVD files onto your disk. Then DVD2One compresses the video (especially useful for dual layer disks that you read in) and can optionally produce a .img file (you need to do some magic to DVD2One as per supplied instructions when you buy it). That .img file can be burned by Disk Utility in Panther.
I will do a step by step and blog it with a trackback to here…

If you want a great step-by-step for DVD2OneX and DVD Backup, go here. I used it to learn how to do it and it worked perfectly.
*Read the very last post on page 6 if you will be using Toast 6 Titanium to burn it (which works absolutely flawlessly).
